REA MD inspects 200KW solar hybrid mini-grid project in Niger community

The Managing Director (MD), Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mr Ahmad Salihijo, at the weekend, inspected a 200Kilowatts peak solar hybrid mini-grid project in Danchitagi Community, Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State.

The project, which was developed by PowerGen with 450kWh Li-ion batteries, is fully operational and currently serves over 700 users in the community. 10k Variable Resistor

Speaking after inspecting the project, the agency boss said it was deployed under the Performance-Based Grant (PBG) programme of the Solar Hybrid Mini Grid component of the Nigeria Electrification Project, funded by the World Bank.

He said the visit was to evaluate the project’s impact on beneficiary communities and ensure compliance with approved technical standards set by the agency.

According to him, through the NEP-PBG initiative, over 80 similar mini-grids had been deployed across the country, to ensure equitable access to electricity.

He assured that the agency will continue its accelerated deployment of impactful energy access projects while maintaining standardised implementation.

Salihijo stressed the importance of placing people at the center of energy access programmes and initiatives, saying; “REA’s mini-grids continue to catalyse productive use of energy, driving socioeconomic development.”

He also highlighted the cost-saving benefits of renewable energy, particularly after the recent removal of fuel subsidies, as beneficiaries can now rely on clean energy to power their homes and businesses instead of costlier alternatives like petrol and diesel generators.
